...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead gründeten sich gegen Ende des Jahres 1994 in Olympia, im amerikanischen Bundesstaat Washington (nicht zu verwechseln mit der Hauptstadt), um Jason Reece und Conrad Keely herum. Nachdem das Duo ins texanische Austin umgezogen war, gaben sie ihre ersten Konzerte als You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead, bevor sie die Konjunktion und die drei Pünktchen sowie den Gitarristen Kevin Allen und den Bassisten / Sampler Neil Busch zum Bandnamen bzw. der Band hinzufügten.
