Alexandre Desplat ist bekannt dafür, dass er die einzigartigen Emotionen eines Films in seinen Soundtracks fängt. Mit seiner Liebe zur Orchestrierung und seinem Hintergrund in brasilianischer und afrikanischer Musik hat der Oscar-Preisträger das stimmungsvolle Melodrama von „Harry Potter und die Heiligtümer des Todes, Teil 2“ („Lily’s Theme“), die skurrile Sci-Fi-Stimmung von „Shape of Water – Das Flüstern des Wassers“ (2017) und die mutig-entschlossene Stimmung von „Little Women“ (2019) eingefangen. Der 1961 geborene Desplat wuchs zwischen Klavier, Flöte und Trompete auf und ließ sich sowohl vom Jazz als auch von den Werken klassischer Komponist:innen wie Maurice Ravel und Claude Debussy inspirieren, bevor er sich für die Komposition entschied, als er die „Star Wars“-Partitur von John Williams hörte. Nach seinem Abschluss an der Musikhochschule konzentrierte er sich auf die Vertonung französischer Filme, Fernsehsendungen und Werbespots. 2003 gelang ihm der Durchbruch in Hollywood mit dem reich orchestrierten „Das Mädchen mit dem Perlenohrring“. Die moderne Filmstück begeistert mit majestätischen Streichern, kaskadenförmigem Klavier, samtigen Holzbläsern und gelegentlichen Bläserpassagen. Seitdem hat Desplat seine Arbeit kontinuierlich fortgesetzt und erhielt Auszeichnungen für seine Zusammenarbeit mit Regisseuren wie Stephen Frears („Philomena“ von 2013) und Wes Anderson (Oscar-prämierte Filmmusik für „Grand Budapest Hotel“ von 2014).
