The Good, the Bad & the Queen begann 2006 als Seitenprojekt von Blur-Frontmann Damon Albarn, während er das zweite Gorillaz-Album Demon Days fertigstellte. Tatsächlich fand das Projekt aber schon 2004 seinen Anfang, als Albarn zusammen mit Verve-Gitarrist Simon Tong nach Nigeria reiste, um dort mit dem legendären Drummer Tony Allen und anderen afrikanischen Musikern aufzunehmen. Später gab Albarn die Bänder an Gorillaz-Produzent Danger Mouse und holte den Clash-Bassisten Paul Simonon an Bord. Ein selbstbetiteltes Album erschien 2007, eine Tournee folgte. Erst 2018 gab es eine Fortsetzung: Auf dem von Tony Visconti produzierten zweiten Album Merrie Land kommentiert Albarn mit Galgenhumor den Brexit.
