Anouar Brahem hat die Rolle der Oud revolutioniert: Ursprünglich wurde diese arabische Laute nur als Begleitinstrument eingesetzt, Brahem holte sie aber in den Vordergrund. Der 1957 geborene Tunesier begann schon mit 10 Jahren das Studium der Oud am National-Konservatorium in Tunis, mit 15 trat er mit Orchestern auf. In den Achtzigern verbrachte er einige Jahre in Paris, arbeitete dort mit dem Choreographen Maurice Bejart, komponierte für verschiedene Filme und begann, Jazz-Elemente in seine Musik zu holen. 1990 lernte er ECM-Labelchef Manfred Eicher kennen, der ihn unter Vertrag nahm. 1991 erschien Brahems Debütalbum Barzakh. Im Laufe der Jahre arbeitete Brahem mit Meistern aus den verschiedensten Ländern, darunter der norwegische Saxophonist Jan Garbarek, der französische Akkordeonspieler Richard Galliano und die amerikanischen Jazz-Legenden Dave Holland und Jack DeJohnette (letztere auf Blue Maqams, 2017).
