Die Sängerin und Schlagzeugerin Mari Boine (Persen) verleiht den ehrwürdigen, schamanischen, musikalischen Traditionen der Samen im Norden Skandinaviens (Lappland) eine moderne Note. Obwohl ihre sehr rhythmischen Songs dem non-verbalen Yoik (oder Joik), d.h. dem jodelhaften Oberton-Gesang der Samen verhaftet sind, bedient sich Boine bei ihren Arrangements auch beim Jazz, Rock sowie anderen ethnischen Elementen. Boine, die selbst teilweise Saami ist, lernte den spiritualistischen Psalmengesang der christlichen "Laestadian"-Bewegung schon als Kind kennen. In ihren Liedern fand einen Weg, ihren Gefühle über die Diskriminierung, der sie als Teenager aufgrund ihres Saami-Hintergrundes ausgesetzt war, Ausdruck zu verleihen. ~ Craig Harris
