In ihrem kompromisslosen Sound vermengen Septicflesh (früher Septic Flesh) brutalen Death Metal und Symphonic Metal mit Einflüssen von Black Metal, Doom und Goth. Die Gruppe aus Athen wurde 1991 von Sänger und Bassist Spiros Antoniou und den Gitarristen Sotiris Vayenas und Christos Antoniou gegründet, das Debütalbum Mystic Places of Dawn erschien 1994. Mit den Platten Ophidian Wheel (1997) und A Fallen Temple (1998) ging der Sound schon in eine sinfonische Richtung, Revolution DNA (1999) verstärkte das Goth-Flair. Nach Sumerian Daemons (2003) löste sich die Band auf, kam aber schon 2007 wieder zusammen. Das Reunion-Album Communion (2008) wurde mit großem Orchester und Chor aufgenommen, und die Band führte den aufwendigen Stil auf den Folgeplatten The Great Mass (2011), Titan (2014), Codex Omega (2017) und Modern Primitive (2022) fort.
